Released in 2015 and currently available on Netflix, this inspirational movie about perseverance and believing in oneself will have you jumping up with a new enthusiasm for life. Jennifer Lawrence plays an aspiring inventor, Joy, who has some struggles in life; she lives with immediate and extended family members - including her ex-husband - in a small, cramped house.
When Joy reveals her intention to bring her ideas for household inventions to the public, she is met with unrelenting amounts of criticism and is made into a laughing stock. True to character, Joy shows us just how rewarding, albeit difficult, it can be to push through to achieving our dreams.
One of the greatest characteristics that can lead us to success and personal growth is perseverance. In order to achieve what we believe we can, we must first step out into the unknown, willing and able to accept some difficulty along the way. Regardless of pushback, Joy remarkably keeps moving forward - always looking for another way to get her inventions noticed and become something for her family.
How can you apply this to your own life? Start by clarifying your goals; know exactly what you want from life, then make a game-plan for how to realize your dreams! Even the most elaborate desires will have steps that they can be broken down into; as you move closer and closer to achieving your set reality, you’ll be amazed how great you feel.

“Surrender to what is. Let go of what was. Have faith in what will be.” ~ Sonia Ricotti
Don’t dwell on what has or has not gone well in your life; each of your experiences from years past has built the foundation for who you are today. Embrace your past and apply its lessons to your future. Be present and mindful of how each moment is either bringing you closer to your dreams or preparing you to move forward in reaching your goals. Every moment is a gift we must cherish and put to good use.
The mind is a powerful tool when harnessed and used properly - with the proper mindset, we can experience boosted confidence and even perseverance outside our character. Positivity and belief mindsets can help us achieve our dreams more easily than we ever thought possible. There’s a reason many motivational speakers like to quote Earl Nightingale when they deliver speeches to the masses: our brains truly can help us “become what we think about”. To deny the power of a simple mindset shift is to miss out on a whole dimension of motivational thinking.
The best thing you can do on the road to achieving your personal goals is to simply take a single step. It’s often said that the hardest thing we can do is start. Get the ball rolling with one small action, regardless of how tiny it is in the big scheme of things. Joy, for example, picks up her child’s crayons and finally draws her mop concept - this sparks her ingenuity and excitement for inventing. If there’s something you love, pick up the crayon and get moving; one thing is certain: no one ever moved forward by standing still.
