A Career In The Retail Fashion Industry

A Career In The Retail Fashion Industry

Running any kind of business, in any kind of industry, is anything but easy. Everyone in fashion knows that the nature of styles, trends, apparels, and purchasing preferences are ever-changing. That’s probably why after 4-years in business, only 47% of apparel companies are successful.

In a country like Singapore, known for wealth, grandeur, success, and an aging population, apparel companies and those working in fashion are missing out on the elemental parts of getting started. In essence, the workforce would rather jump right into the designer and managerial roles without learning to sew, press, wash, and iron the clothing they will be selling.

You Need to Start from the Bottom

To make it to the top, you have to start from the bottom. A career in fashion is a life-long, full-time endeavor, which is why different roles within the organization need to be experienced and championed. In fact, experiencing different roles will make you that much more successful when you do get to the top.

Example: If you start as a sales assistant, but communicate your desire to grow with the company, they can expose you to jobs like logistic managers at the same place. You will be learning how to talk to people, meticulously communicate details, manage inventory, unpack goods and services, and stage shop floors. By the time you reach the top of the food chain, you will be unstoppable!

From Hard Work Comes Glory

In Singapore, as well as most Western nations, people view work in the service sector as a position of very little value. Most students see themselves working in fashion for just a small amount of time before they jump to their dream job (or open their dream startup).

Not many see the industry as a rewarding career. What they are failing to realize is that it can be one of the most rewarding things they will ever do, if only they have the gumption to stick with it.

If you do not know how to work from the bottom, how can you guide people in their junior roles to become manager? Of course, every business owner knows the millennial turnover is no joke. Just last year, 21% of millenials switched jobs. That’s why it’s time to show them what a career in fashion can provide.

The Stepping Stones

Candidates with little to no experience can still find work as a retail sales assistant. Those with less experience should understand that working hard is just a stepping stone towards their managerial role. Fashion provides some of the best upward mobility in Singapore and beyond, which is why we should stop degrading its value!

Making it the fashion industry is just a matter of hard work, commitment, and humble dedication. With that mixture, a successful fashion career is inevitable.
